Please introduce yourself and what you do.

My name is Leilah Talukder I am an Art practice and Art History student at
UC Berkeley.

What is your favorite Consttant piece and how would you style yourself in it?

My favorite constant pieces are the jean kimonos, especially the longer
version. I would wear the kimonos with platform heals and a short skirt or
dress, staying with the slate grey color palate. I would part my hair in the
middle and keep it back in a low pony. Add dramatic silver earrings and a
delicate silver chain.
Shop Leilah's favorite-the Nori Denim Kimono Duster.

Share a quote that inspires your originality, to be you and not care what anyone thinks.

“Work done with anxiety about results is far inferior to work done without such anxiety, in the calm of self-surrender.” by Bhagavad Gita.
This quote motivates me to not be attached to the results of my creative labor, and respect the process that goes into making and being original. It inspires me to trust myself , and ackownledge that I have everything I need to create inside me. This quote is from Bhagavad Gita in the Hindu scriptures and philosophy that he
wrote. I prefer to take it out of context and apply it to myself absent of the
religious connotations.

What motivates you on the daily?

I let whatever compels me motivate me on the daily. I mean that if I am
inspired by something I allow myself the freedom to explore that and go as
deep into that as I wish to. I also like to keep my goals in to forefront of
my mind as a check point to make sure what I do can contribute to my
success. I am also very fortunate to have very supportive and inspiring
friends and family.

Share about a negative experience that has turned into a positive experience.

I used to be an athlete, and I had to quit my sport because of injuries and
other extenuating circumstances. This experience was both a positive and
negative experience, but what I learned was that I could express myself in so
many different ways. I was lucky to find fashion design at this time and it
helped me realize that creativity had no limits and that it can translate into
many parts of life.

Who inspires you to be you?

The women throughout history, and more specifically artist throughout
history, who have been unapologetic about themselves and their art inspire
me to be myself. They are a constant reminder that the only way to truly be
unique is to be yourself.

Tell us about your favorite song and how it motivates you.

One of the songs that keeps me motivated is Ain’t Got No, I Got Life – Nina
Simone . It is one of the most motivating songs because it reminds you that as
long as you have yourself that is all you need to keep going and be great. In
the song she lists all the things she does not have as a black woman in the
fifties and sixties, but goes on to list everything that she has about herself,
and that she has agency because of that. I think this is a salient reminder that
all we truly have, and all we truly need is ourselves.

What are your dreams and how do you want to achieve it?

My dream is to be a fashion designer or a creative director for a big house, or
for my own. My main objective in doing this is to be a positive force in the
fashion industry trying to re-define labor value and the models we have for
production and consumption. I hope to achieve them by getting my degree in
fashion design after getting my degree from Berkeley and enter the industry
afterwards to get connections.
