Consttant Babe: Abi

Please introduce yourself, what you do, and where you are based.

My name is Abi Koh and I'm a User Experience designer! I'm based in San Francisco. I'm also the founder and editor-in-chief of the online magazine, Re(de)fining Magazine.
The magazine is dedicated to young women as they redefine and refine who they are. It covers a diverse spectrum of topics relevant to young women - highlighting topics such as self-discovery, mental health, fashion, and fitness. The magazine celebrates creativity and drive by sharing the artistic endeavors and entrepreneurial ventures women have made. Re(de)fining Magazine values honest stories and reflections that instill a sense of hope and inspire young women as they grow.

Share how you came to be doing what you do.

I started Re(de)fining Magazine because I was very dissatisfied with the market of magazines catered towards young women. Oftentimes, the magazines were sending the message that you're not enough unless you look or act a certain way. I wanted a magazine that covered more than just surface-level topics. I was really inspired by a lot of emerging independent magazines, and thought to myself, "Why don't I just start my own?"

What is something you always remind yourself to do while creating?

I have to remind myself to take a break and be patient! I'm often really hard on myself when I'm not reaching my goals as quickly as I'd like. However, I know from past experiences that pushing myself too hard can lead to burnout. As a result, I try to be patient and have accepted that going at a slower pace allows me to enjoy the whole process more.

What is your favorite piece of artwork that inspires you and how does it make you feel?

One of my favorite poems is by Rupi Kaur
“stay strong through your pain
grow flowers from it
you have helped me
grow flowers out of mine so
bloom beautifully
dangerously
loudly
bloom softly
however you need
just bloom”
I have a plant tattooed on my ankle that was partially inspired by this poem. I love this poem so much because it reminds me all the challenges I've overcome and gives me hope and encourgament to keep moving on.

What do you want to see more of in the world?

I would love to see more women supporting other women instead of tearing each other down. Due to feelings of insecurity or societal pressure, it can be easy to view other women as competition. However, I think it's so important to encourage and support other women when possible! There have been so many times when I've been inspired and encouraged by female friends and acquaintances -- I hope to pass that goodwill along.
